Helping Your Child Be Thankful

As children of God we have so much to be thankful for. Our children are learning about God and His love in our children programs. The ideas below will help to nurture and encourage in your child an attitude of thankfulness to God.

1. Model gratitude in your actions.

Pray aloud with your child, thanking God for his love and care.

Sincerely use the words thank you often when your child does something helpful.

Express appreciation to others in your child’s presence.

Avoid an emphasis on possessions.

2. Help your child learn ways to show thankfulness to God.

Give your child money for an offering to Sunday School.

Sing thank you songs to God together. “God Is So Good” has a tune that is great for making your own thank you song.

Read Bible phrases about saying thank you to God.

Voice simple sentence prayers as opportunities arise. For example, as you do errands say “Thank you, God for this time together”.

3. Help your child learn how to demonstrate thankfulness to others.

Let your child draw or dictate sentences for thank you notes.

Teach your child to say the words thank you when others do things for him.

Work with your child to do a kind deed to show thankfulness. For example, take cookies to a neighbor who fed your cat while you were out of town.

In all things let us give thanks
